Howdy from sunny Berlin! How is everybody doing? I am doing great because I happened to find this amazing shop of Scandinavian design Illums Bolighus in Copenhagen, the city where I spent last weekend.
Oh boy, that city is expensive. Just for food and accommodation together, I have spent nearly 500 EUR during only one weekend. But let’s not talk about that. Scandinavian design shop. That’s what I want to talk about.
Illums Bolighus was founded in 1925 under the name BO. The man behind BO was the Danish entrepreneur Kaj Dessau, who had a strong sense of aesthetics as well as a flair for business. Working with his artistic consultant Brita Drewsen, he created a concept that had never been seen before: a store with arranged and furnished interiors, where textiles and furniture all interacted as art. The exceptional foresight displayed by both Drewsen and Dessau, as well as their impeccable sense of style and quality, played an important role in the international acclaim long accorded to Danish interior design.
After the store was purchased in 1941 by the Illum, Berg, and Trock-Jansen families, who also owned the A.C. Illum A/S department store, it was renamed Illums Bolighus A/S. The trendsetting and visionary display windows of Illums Bolighus have always been a feature of the store, which has reflected social development and progress ever since it opened as BO in 1925.
These windows also serve to illustrate Illums Bolighus’ business concept: an attractive and inspirational shopping environment that is always at the cutting edge of both fashion and societal mores.
The store in Copenhagen has 4 floors and the space is filled with amazing designs of well-known and new designers and items. Most of the items are the perfect way to get to know Scandi style.
The first floor was fully dedicated to home decor items and kitchen appliances. That was, I must say, my favourite area to browse and wander around.
The second floor was mostly clothing and bedding. The third and the fourth floors are for furniture shopping.
Illums Bolighus has more than 17 stores located in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Germany.
Find the closes store to you and enjoy wonderful Danish designs.
