Brainstorming and defining a business idea of Ommik12 January, 2023
Let’s build a home office workstation on a budget together. When I am thinking of the cheapest furniture, I have two words: “IKEA” and “JYSK“. There are no people in the world, who would never hear about IKEA, the Swedish household goods giant. JYSK is another Scandinavian company (Denmark) of household goods, which has an assortment of budget furniture. Besides, if you are living in Germany, you might hear of the company called Möbel Höffner. I made a “shop with me” post a few years ago.
In this post, I will try to build the cheapest home office workstation that still would look fantastic! Let’s go!
Home office workstation on a budget
Alternatively, in JYSK I have just found an incredible discount on a beautiful desk BRYRUP. For only 60 € (normal price was 129 €) you can get a beautiful design desk with two drawers. On the downside, it is a bit narrow (48 cm width) for my taste.
In Möbel Höffner, unfortunately, I didn’t find a cheap and good-looking desk. The designs are really bulky and look heavy and uncomfortable.
Our total budget so far: 60-78,99 €.
Now, when it comes to chairs, I would pay extra attention to the comfort the chair has to offer. But also, I believe the office chair doesn’t look good at home settings, so avoid the fancy ergonomic office chairs, unless you don’t care much about the interior design.
IKEA offers two budget design chairs. First, ELDBERGET / MALSKÄR, 49,99 €, has a beautiful oval design with a back support. It suits perfectly for those who need to adjust their height. It comes in 4 colors, and it is just a beautiful piece of furniture. Second, ÖRFJÄLL, 59,99 €, has a beautiful design and looks a bit more durable due to the metal frame.
JYSK also offers two great options, but a bit pricier. ABILDHOLT, 75 €, has an attractive design and warm soft feel. KOKKEDAL, 109 €, has better reviews and people simply love how comfortable the chair is.
Möbel Höffner has a chair DREHSTUHL III, 59 €, that is a bit more office-y, but still, I can imagine it would work just nicely in some home office settings.
Our total budget so far: 109,99 – 187,99 €.
I am not a big fan of the lighting from IKEA, as somehow the designs of the lamps are not to my taste. Nonetheless, for the price of 29,99 €, you can get a more or less fine desk lamp FRANSALG, or for 34,99 € RANARP. They both look pretty universal and won’t take up much space.
JYSK is not big in the lighting industry, and I found only two lamps, but I would not buy them for myself.
Our total budget so far: 139,39 – 247,99 €.
Accessories are optional, but let’s make a deal: we dedicate a bit of our budget to them, too, because only accessories enable the workstation to shine.
In IKEA you can get a new product called VATTENKAR, 24,99 €, which is a laptop/monitor stand. What I like about it is that it is also an organizer, which is great if you have a limited space. For additional 9,99 €, you can get a nice grey desk pad, BRYTAREN. For only 2,99 €, you can get a smartphone/tablet holder BERGENES made of bamboo. For your desk utensils, get a beautiful RISATORP organizer for only 14,99 €.
Unfortunately, JYSK and Möbel Höffner don’t offer many home office accessories and I could not find anything worth mentioning. I would say, IKEA is shining here.
Our total budget: 192,35 – 300,95 €.
As you can see, even if you are on a very tight budget (192,35 €), you still can build something beautiful and functional for your home and get focused and productive. If you chip in another hundred euros (300,95 €), you can get a bit more durable items and still it would be pretty cheap.
Just a bit of creativity and you are all set! Tell me, would that be something you enjoy having at home?
