For quite some time now IKEA has been trying really hard to rebrand itself as a sustainable business. After all the illegal logging scandals in the past, IKEA is making bold moves towards sustainability, eco-friendly living, and climate change awareness.
Recently, IKEA introduced a new service – disassembly instructions from IKEA, which helps removing and recycling old IKEA products. They would collect the old furniture and if it is still good for usage, they would donate to different organizations and local families in need of some support. Nonetheless, if you happen to open the Remove & Recycle page on the IKEA website, you can see a message, “Due to COVID-19, IKEA has suspended its Remove and Recycle service as a precautionary measure.”
Now, IKEA has announced that by 2030 they will embed each one of their products with the potential to repurpose, repair, reuse, resell or recycle. Remove & recycle was apparently the first step for bigger plans. Now, they want their customers to become responsible consumers, and to share the idea of recycling. To promote this, IKEA launched the first disassembly instructions of the most popular products.
Extending the life of your furniture with our disassembly Instructions is one of the ways we’re building on our commitment to sustainability. No matter whether you’re moving home, giving your furniture away or selling it. Taking it apart correctly reduces the risk of damage and reduces its impact on the environment. Fortune favours the frugal.

I personally love the idea and the message. IKEA has great value and the idea of reuse, repair and recycle is wonderful. The goal isn’t simply to help you buy new and better furniture. The hope is that showing customers a less destructive way to take their furniture apart will encourage more of them to recycle or give it to someone in need.
As part of the sustainability strategy to make sustainable living more affordable, IKEA is also launching a ‘Buy Back’ scheme and selling replacement parts.
