Video of the week: DIY small bathroom makeover on a budget
26 March, 2022I guess, if you end up reading this post, you are sick and tired of your bathroom and in need of some changes. Here we will talk about 6 simple tips for the bathroom upgrade, so you will make a great home improvement without much effort. So, let’s get started!
6 simple tips for the bathroom upgrade
Storage
In the bathroom, we all store many things: shampoos, shower gels, body washes, hair products, face masks, trimmers, razors, brushes, pills, and many more. We do need a good organizing system to make sure we can find things easily. Therefore, storage space is crucial.
I love organizing spaces, and for this, I use man boxes and baskets. If you have space, you can organize your stuff in boxes neatly and by categories. For example, how I do it, using boxes from IKEA, I fill up one box with supplies, such as shampoos, deodorants, shower gels etc. Basically, something I buy in bulk. Another box I use for the things I use most often, like toothbrushes, contact lenses, razor and trimmer, etc.

I also use a beautiful basket to store my stash of toilet paper. Personally, I am not a big fan of toilet roll holders, so the basket is my solution.
If you have a bathroom vanity, as I do, you can use it to store other things, like a box of pills, plasters and other stuff from the pharmacy. Normally, they should be stored in a dark, dry and cool space, so vanity is the best option.
Another good idea is to have a basket for your laundry. Think of something made of sustainable material, fabric or wood.
Towels

In this post, I was sharing my own experience of purchasing a brand-new set of towels. I wanted to upgrade my old ones, that with time became more like sandpaper, with new, luxurious ones. You don’t have to upgrade your bathroom with expensive towels, but I am sure we all need an upgrade of towels from time to time. Maybe it is a perfect time? New fresh towels in the bathroom are definitely a great upgrade.
Bathroom essentials

It is never a bad idea to replace your old bathroom essentials. When I talk about bathroom essentials, I am talking about:
- Soap dispenser
- Toothbrush holder
- Maybe it is time to replace towel hooks or towel holders, too? Avoid using plastic, they look cheap.
- Toilet brush (yup, it’s about time!)
- Bathroom bin
- Shower caddies
- Shower curtain
- Bathmat
- How about a wooden floor decking instead of a bathmat?
Wall decor
Let’s spruce up the space and give it a bit of identity by adding decor. The bathroom space is normally limited for the normal decor, so consider adding wall decor. Currently, it is very trendy to have either a massive mirror, almost the entire wall, or a round mirror.
Don’t be afraid to add pictures on the walls, too. I reviewed this wall art website before, and I am sure you can find a perfect picture for your bathroom.
The lighting could be also a wonderful idea to upgrade your space. Consider changing the lamp that uses less energy.
And finally, it is also nice to have plants in the bathroom. As we don’t have natural light in this space, we have to be smart about it. Do research on what type of plants can survive without natural light or use artificial ones. Nowadays, artificial plants look extremely natural. Make sure you use hangers to attach the plants to the wall. You can use small plants on the bathroom shelves, too.
Textile
Don’t be afraid to use textiles in the bathroom. You could have special towels for the floor to avoid making it wet while showering or taking a bath. Use new shower curtains and bathmat. With textiles, it is important not to overwhelm the space. So be careful.
Smart home gadgets

If you want to make your bathroom smart, try some of these ideas:
- Bathroom mirror with lighting, that you can control. Alternatively, you can DIY your mirror with LED strips.
- LED strips to be on at night, in case you need to go for number one (or two, you filthy animal) and don’t want to turn on the primary light. Good thing about it, you can be as creative as possible and attach it to anything you want. Keep in mind, it needs a power source.
- Showerhead with a speaker. Connect your showerhead to bluetooth and listen to your music while taking a shower. Yes, you can sing.
- Touchless bathroom sink faucet.
- Smart aroma diffuser.
Bonus tip: wallpaper

In this post, we talked about wallpaper trends. Briefly, I have mentioned the new trend of having wallpaper in the bathroom. You can use either abstract shapes or something braver, like botanical or underwater-themed wallpapers.
