In this article, we would like to discuss 10 reasons why you hate your apartment and the interior and how you can fix it. From the planning of your apartment and the location of your furniture to plastic home décor – this and other mistakes we ended up making when forgetting the importance of the comfortable interior design.
We tend to forget that furniture is not only the functional part of our interior but also could be a massive turn off if pushed against the walls. Of course, you can do it, but don’t forget, the room is 3-dimensional, and we want to make sure the centre of the room is not just space.
Solution: make your interior more comfortable, use the entire space and don’t be afraid to use the central part of the room as well.
This is the opposite of the first reason. Sometimes we just have so much furniture and place one on top of another, or next to each other, that we make it impossible to move around the room freely.
Solution: when you place furniture around the room, make sure you can easily walk around, and you don’t have any obstacles made of furniture. If you do have, get rid of some of the furniture or replace it in a better way.
European households are slightly different from Americans. For example, in Europe, it is quite common to have a ceiling lamp and mostly it is the brightest source of light. In American houses is more common to have stand lamps, table lamps and wall lamps. Due to this, American households normally have less bright rooms, where European ones are too bright. The proper lighting is way too important, and it is crucial to find the right balance.
Solution: apart from the central source of lighting (ceiling lamp), it is important to have American-style wall lamps and table lamps. The ceiling lamp could have warmer lighting and the side lamps a bit brighter.
We all know how home décor can bring individuality to the interior. Home décor creates a homey feeling and brings coziness. But too much décor can kill the vibe and your room will end up looking like a hoarder’s paradise.
Solution: when you select home décor items, make sure they are cohesive and complement each other. This tactic could be your stopper when you see an item which is different from your room’s design, and you will avoid purchasing it.
This is a common mistake we all make, especially in the kitchen. The kitchen is the place where we store so many different items, which we place around the cabinets, storage room and they eventually get full, so we start placing those items around the surfaces, like shelves, tops of the cabinets, even the dining table.
Solution: this is important to start from the planning of the entire kitchen, you need to consider having a project with all the possible storage spaces, so you can select the proper kitchen furniture implementing this project.
The biggest mistake in the small kitchens is to place the sink in the corner. On the one hand, you might think it is a great solution to save some space. But home needs to be a place for us and our comfort, and there is nothing more uncomfortable than having the sink in the corner. Good luck with washing your dishes.
Solution: move the sink a bit further from the corner. Yes, you will lose some space on the working surface, but you gain comfort.
There are two problems with such planning. Firstly, it is incredibly uncomfortable, and secondly, the heat from the stove affects the functionality of the fridge and it will start freezing stronger, and eventually can break faster (we don’t even mention the electricity bills).
Solution: simply make sure there is a space between these two appliances. Even a small space would do the trick.
Ommik is a sustainable brand. Plastic is something we will always be fighting with, so this is also important for us, to spread the message. Plastic home décor items normally look cheap.
Solution: instead of plastic, try to find home décor items that are made of wood, ceramic, or any other material that is eco-friendly.
When it comes to art, we want to highlight them. For example, the common mistake of putting a picture on the wall is to hang it too high.
Solution: eye-level as a starting point, and then a bit lower. As a bonus, try to hang it in a very uncommon/unexpected location.
Rugs are such a great idea to make the space homey. But small area rugs could destroy the look of the space completely.
Solution: All the furniture should be sitting on the rug. If this isn’t possible, the frontal legs of more solid pieces can be on the rug.
